Lead Service Inventory and Replacement Program

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR WATER SERVICE LINES

NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH BEGINS TOWN-WIDE INVENTORY AND REPLACEMENT PROGRAM

The Town of North Attleborough Water Division, through the Board of Public Works, is implementing a 5-Year Inventory and Replacement program to remove all remaining lead services from both the Town's side (Water Main to Curb Stop at Property Line) and the Homeowner's side (Curb Stop to Meter). This program is funded through a MASS DEP Grant.

North Attleborough's Water is Lead Free

Water from North Attleborough's Well Systems contain no lead. the Town has also replaced and lined a number of older pipes that could have lead joints.  Lead can get into tap water if you have lead pipes in your home. Lead can also enter tap water from if you have lead solder or brass fixtures in your home. Corrosion or wearing away of lead-based materials can add lead to tap water, especially if water sits for a long time in the pipes before use.

Lead can also leach into water if lead was used in the service pipes that connect your home to North Attleborough's water mains. Most pipes that carry water to your home are made of copper and do not add lead to your water.

The Water Division has completed an inventory of all water service within the Town and has identified the type of material on the Town's side,  but there are a number of homes that cannot definitively determine that there is not lead on the home-owner's side. The Town has sent notification letters to all homes where there may be a question about the type of service into the home.

If we know that your home has a lead line, we will send you a specific letter to notify you.  While the homeowner is responsible for the water service replacement, the Town will be scheduling a replacement program over the next 5 to 6 years. If you choose to replace on your own, please notify the Town when you are scheduling.

What should I do?

  • In the letter, we have provided several QR Codes that customers can use to learn more about their water service and assist the Town in completing the service material inventory.
  • If you are unsure or unable to perform an inspection and report, residents can contact the North Attleborough Water Division at 508-695-7790 to schedule an inspection.  Inspections are performed by our Water Meter personnel and only take 15-30 minutes to complete. Please make sure there is adequate room around the meter for inspection.

What is next?

As the Water Division adds information to our Database, we will continue our program of Lead Water Service Line removal projects and any lead services found and reported will be added to the list for future projects.  We hope to have the inventory completed this fiscal year (June 2025) and will continue with replacement projects over the next 5-years. All work will be done by the Town or Town-hired contractors at no additional cost to the rate-payer.

Where can I get additional information?

If you have questions about your water system’s operation, water quality monitoring, or response to this issue, please contact the Water Division directly. If you have questions about lead in drinking water and things you can do, Mass.gov has an excellent informational webpage "Is there lead in my tap water?" for more information.
