Food Waste Collection and Composting

Black Earth Compost Flyer for N AttleboroughThe Town of North Attleborough Solid Waste Department has partnered with Black Earth Compost to offer food waste composting. Roughly 30% of household trash is food waste. By composting food waste, households will save valuable resources from the trash and money.

Drop Off at Recycling Center

As part of the program, three 64-gallon food waste toters will be stationed at the Recycling Center, 777 Mount Hope St., for residents to drop off their food waste at no additional cost. Residents who participate in the Town’s trash and recycling program and have a valid Recycling Center Sticker affixed to their vehicle can bring their food waste to the Recycling Center during their normal business hours. The recycling center hours are Monday, Friday, and Saturday 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM.

Food scraps should only be in approved compost bags.  These bags will be labeled BPI, CMA, OK Compost certified.  Please check the Black Earth Website for additional information.

If you do not have the approved compost bags, you can bring the food waste in a small bucket and dump the food waste into the compost bins.  Do not put any packaging, non- compostable bags, containers, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, take out containers or storage containers etc. in the compost bins.  These items will contaminate the compost product.

Please note that if you are bringing cooking oil, please do not put the bottle(s) of oil in the bin but put them next to the bins.

The first 150 residents who submit the Food Scrap Buck Sign-Up Form will receive a free kitchen scrap bucket and liner. Once registered, the first 150 residents to sign up will then be contacted to schedule a date and time for them to retrieve their bucket and liners from the Recycling Center. Once all the free scrap buckets have been claimed, interested residents who have a valid Recycling Center sticker can use a bucket of their own to collect food scraps to drop off at the Recycling Center.

**Update 5/2/2025 There are approximately 50 food scrap buckets still available.

Curbside Pickup Program

In addition to dropping food waste off at the Recycling Center, Black Earth also offers a curbside pickup for residents for a fee. Please note that the curbside pickup will not be covered by the Solid Waste Department and that those who would like the service must pay for it themselves. Residents who are interested in having the curbside food scrap collection pickup at their home can register with Black Earth. In the spring, Black Earth Compost curbside participants will receive a voucher for a cubic foot bag of compost and discounts on bulk compost and soil blends. More information about the Black Earth Compost Residential Curbside Program can be found on their website.

The first 150 households that sign up for the curbside program will receive a free starter kit, including a curbside bin and liners, courtesy of the Solid Waste Department using awarded MA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Recycling Dividends Program (RDP) grant funding.

The initiative is sponsored by the Solid Waste Department and funded with a grant to help reduce waste.

Compost is also available for purchase from Black Earth Compost.

Home composting bins are now available at the Solid Waste Department office at 777 Mt. Hope St, North Attleborough.  The 80 Gallon "Earth Machine" is a durable backyard compost bin designed to compost food and yard waste effectively diverting it from landfills.  We are selling the compost bins at cost, which is $65.00.
