Town of North Attleborough Issues Temporary Ban on Outside Fires

Home Posted on November 04, 2024

Due to multiple active brush fires across the state and an extended forecast of dry conditions, the Fire Chief has issued a temporary ban on all outdoor fires. This ban includes recreational and cooking fires in firepits and chimneys; however, gas and propane grills are still allowed.

The Executive Office of Public Safety & Security, Department of Conservation & Recreation, Department of Fire Services, Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, and Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts are urging residents to remain vigilant as current weather conditions make dry leaves, dead vegetation, and other materials highly flammable.

Officials recommend that residents take the following precautions:

  • Observe the statewide open burning prohibition, effective through January.
  • Avoid outdoor cooking or heating with wood or charcoal. Sparks and embers from firepits, chimneys, and grills can easily ignite surrounding dry vegetation and debris.
  • Exercise caution with power equipment like lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and ATVs. These machines can generate heat that may ignite dry grass and leaves.
  • Properly dispose of fireplace and wood stove ashes by placing them in a metal container, soaking them with water, and sealing with a tight-fitting lid. Ashes can remain hot for a longtime, creating a fire hazard if not handled correctly.
  • Extinguish smoking materials completely in a sturdy ashtray with water or sand. Never discard cigarette butts, matches, or other smoking items in dry areas, stairways, or balconies where they can spark fires.

This temporary ban and these precautions are essential to prevent further incidents and protect our communities during this period of heightened fire risk. This ban will remain in effect until released by the Fire Chief.
