North Attleborough officials would like to share safety tips and information ahead of Thursday’s forecasted winter storm.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for North Attleborough and surrounding areas from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6. Mixed precipitation is forecasted, with total snow and sleet accumulations between 1” and 4”.
The mixture of snow and sleet is expected to impact the morning commute. Similar to snow accumulation, ice can cause extensive damage and be extremely dangerous to motorists and pedestrians. Town officials are monitoring the potential for ice after the snow changes to freezing rain in the afternoon early evening.
North Attleborough officials would like to share the following information and tips, courtesy of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, to assist community members with their morning commute:
- Carefully drive over bridges and overpasses; they’re particularly dangerous because they freeze before other surfaces.
- Exercise extreme caution while driving if you suspect black ice on the road. Black ice is a deadly driving hazard that is most prevalent in the morning hours after snow melts and the roadways freeze.
- Brake early and correctly. It takes more time and distance to stop in adverse conditions.
- Don’t use “cruise control” while driving in wintry conditions. Even roads that look clear can have sudden slippery spots. Don’t crowd the plow. Leave room for maintenance vehicles and plows. Stay at least 200 feet back, and don’t pass on the right.
- Before driving, clear snow and ice from windows, lights, the hood and the roof. Never pour water on your windshield to remove ice or snow—this can cause it to shatter.
- Always carry extra warm clothing and blankets with you. Don’t rely on a car to provide enough heat; the car could break down.
- Staying in your car when stranded is often the safest choice if winter storms create poor visibility or ice-covered roadways.
A half inch of ice accumulation can add 500 pounds of extra weight or more to power lines, resulting in power outages. Community members should call the North Attleborough Electric Department at 508-643-6300 to report power outages.
The Department of Public Works encourages residents to stay off the streets until the roads are cleared. Community members should use caution and take frequent breaks when shoveling snow to prevent overexertion. When shoveling, please dig out fire hydrants and storm drains near your property.
Community members are also encouraged to check on family, friends, and neighbors after a storm, especially those with medical conditions or needing additional assistance. Check out the Town of North Attleborough’s website for more information about winter weather safety.
